How to Paint
The Apollo in Matisse's Studio by Max Weber
Difficulty: 4/5
Colours: Sienna, red, chromium oxide/green, white, cadmium yellow, ultramarine
Brushes: Medium flat brush, small round brush
Max Weber was a Jewish-American painter who was significantly influenced by Henri Matisse. He enrolled in Matisse’s school in Paris, where he painted this piece using vibrant colours typical of the Fauvists (fauve = wild beast).
Overall, this is a very warm painting, i.e. leaning towards redder and yellower tones. Use sienna to create a soft, brown base for the painting. Instead of using black for the darker tones – mix blue with sienna to create an almost-black shade of paint. Far more harmonious, and in much less contrast to the rest of the piece!
