How to Paint
Promenade by August Macke
Difficulty: 3/5
Colours: Titanium white, ultramarine, brilliant red, lemon yellow, mars black, chromium oxide (optional)
Brushes: Flat brush, detail round brush
I found that the key to getting the right ‘Macke’ look was to make the curved line the central theme of the painting – I don’t think there was any need for a straight line at all!
I mixed my own greens (as opposed to using paint from the tube, but you can do this too), using ultramarine and lemon yellow. This allowed me to experiment with a range of cooler (higher ratio of blue to yellow) and warmer (higher ratio of yellow to blue) greens, so I had plenty of hues to play with.
